How to search for Open Access and repository materials

Open Access materials such as the manuscripts stored within roar require no subscription and are freely available online. Open Access and repository content can be found simply through search engines like Google or Google Scholar however there are also some specialist repository searching tools you may wish to investigate:

Citing items from repositories like roar

Always cite the official published version, as this will result in the author(s) receiving proper recognition through services that track citation counts (e.g. Thomson's Web of Science).

When referencing the article as a whole, there may be instances (eg. refering to a specific page for a quote), where you need to also cite the roar version. This is because the page numbering in the roar version might not match the page numbering in the final published version. Set out such citations as follows:

Graham, R. (2009) ‘How to reference papers in roar’. To be published in Name of Journal. Research Open Access Repository (roar@uel) available at: http://roar.uel.ac.uk/jspui/handle/10552/xxx. pp. xx

(Replace the ‘xx’ with the relevant page number and 'xxx' with the item ID from the URI)

In such cases, if you or your institution has access, the preference would be to click through and use the specific page reference from the published version. Even if you are citing the roar version, please try to also cite the published version so that the author(s) receive proper recognition.
