3) Does UEL offer financial assistance for the Pay to Publish Open Access model?

UEL advocates that authors wishing to make their work Open Access deposit in roar.

Sometimes a publishers' policy will prevent authors from complying with their funding mandate in this way. For example although funders want papers to be made available after 6 months some publishers insist on upto 18 month embargo periods before authours can self archive papers in roar. In these cases paid or Gold Open Access options can enable an author to comply. A central Open Access publishing fund has not yet been established at UEL therefore authors may wish to consider the following:

• Some funding bodies (e.g. the Wellcome Trust) offer either to pay for the publication fees of their grantees, or will permit grantees to apply retrospectively to claim them back.

• Other funders such as the UK Research Councils, invite researchers to include publication fees as part of their indirect costs in their grant applications. UEL authors may wish to consider setting aside grant money for Open Access publishing in this way if this is a stated condition of their funding.

Manuscripts of papers should still be sent to us at roar. We will not make them available until after the publisher’s embargo period has passed.
