Frequently asked questions

2) Are there different ways to publish my work Open Access?

There are four ways to make your work Open Access. These fall into two categories: "Gold OA" (i.e. the pay to publish Open Access model) or "Green OA" (i.e. the deposit of peer-reviewed papers in institutional repositories like roar). The publication process and peer review system remain the same with a different business model.

Gold Open Access

  1. Pay to publish in a journal that is fully Open Access and has no subscription fees eg BioMed Central and Nucleic Acids Research, Chemistry Central or PhysMath Central
  2. Pay to publish an individual Open Access paper in a journal that otherwise restricts access only to subscribers (eg hybrid journals published by Springer and Oxford University Press). Publishers' paid open access options,

Green Open Access

  1. Publish in an Open Access journal which does not charge authors fee to publish: for a list of such journals see the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Many of these journals are quite young and not the recognised ‘journals of choice’ that many researchers habitually prefer to publish with.
  2. Publish in a traditional subscription journal, and make a pre-print or post-print copy of the paper available in the University's own repository (roar) or a subject repository (eg ArXiv, PubMed Central or RePEc) or via a personal website. This option is referred to as self archiving. Publishers allowing the deposition of their published version/PDF in Institutional Repositories can be found here
