Not much changes in politics. 'Vote Labour with no illusions' was the cry of one Trotskyite organisation in the 1970s; it remains good advice. Of course, after nineteen years of a government that seemed determined above all else to reverse anything that had been achieved since 1945, it is not surprising that people had illusions by the bucket load. For many people that was about all they did have.
