Frequently Asked Questions

We have put together a list of frequently asked questions with the answers below. However, if you have any more questions about accommodation you can speak to our Residential Services team by e-mailing dlres@uel.ac.uk or by calling +44 (0)20 8223 5409.

I am a Stratford-based student; can I still stay in the Student Village?
A: Yes! Students from both our Docklands and Stratford Campuses stay with us at the Docklands Student Village.

How do I get to Stratford Campus from the Student Village?
A: Cyprus Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station is situated at the entrance to the Docklands Campus; the quickest way to get to Stratford is to take the DLR to Canning Town, then change to the Jubilee Line to Stratford. For Duncan House, take the DLR to Stratford High Street and Duncan House is located opposite. Both journeys should take between 25 and 35 minutes.

How can I pay my rent?
A: You can pay your years rent upfront and receive a 5% discount (please note this must be paid before you move in), or you must set up a payment plan to pay your rent each month. We recommend our students pay by Direct Debit, which must be from a UK bank account. You can also pay in person at the Cashier’s Office in the North Building at Docklands Campus or online via UEL Direct.

How can I pay my deposit?
A: You need to pay your deposit online via UEL Direct.

Can I park on Campus?
A: Unfortunately we are unable to offer car parking at our Docklands Campus. However, we do reserve a limited amount of spaces for Blue Badge holders. If you hold a Blue Badge and require a parking space, please contact dlres@uel.ac.uk or call us on +44(0)20 8223 5409.

Can I bring my bicycle?
A: Yes, UEL actively encourages students to use green transport methods to get around London. There are secure bike sheds located around the campus and in the East Student Village; please note you will need to bring your own bicycle lock.

Are there sports facilities on campus?
A: Yes. Our new £21 million SportsDock centre at the Docklands Campus will official open on Saturday 24th March. The development includes a state-of-the-art gym, indoor and outdoor sports pitches, dance and aerobic studios, a martial arts studio and teaching rooms. UEL Residences and UELSports organise many intra-halls tournaments throughout the year and there are clubs and societies for many sports. To find out more, visit uel.ac.uk/uelsports

Can I smoke on campus?
A: All UEL buildings are non-smoking, including our Student Village. However, cigarette bins are located outside the student halls and you are welcome to smoke outside, at least seven metres distance from the building.

Do I need to get my own insurance?
A: UEL includes basic contents insurance from Endsleigh Insurance inclusive in your rent. However, there are some high-value items not covered by this insurance, we would suggest arranging cover for loss of keys as the cost of replacement can be high. An upgrade is purchasable directly from Endsleigh Insurance at www.endsleigh.co.uk/Pages/Home.aspx.

What do I need to bring?
A: As a guide you will need to bring your own bedding. Alternatively you can buy a pack from a provider such as Uni-Sak.com. You will also need items for cooking and dining. Please note if you are a student from outside the European Union attending the UEL International Welcome Programme, the International Office will provide your bedding pack on arrival. You will also receive a list of items that are not permitted in university halls.

What if I pay my deposit, but I don’t want to accept the room I am offered?
A: You will have four days from the time you get your accommodation offer to accept or decline the offer. You always have the choice to reject the offer. If you do reject your offer of a room, you may not be offered another. If you reject your offer, UEL retains a £100 administration charge against your deposit and the remainder is refunded to you.

What if I pay my deposit, accept my room contract, but later want to cancel?
A: Once you accept your offer, there is a seven-day cooling off period in which you can cancel with no further cash penalty incurred other than the £100 admin fee mentioned above. However, if you do cancel outside this seven- day period UEL will retain a £250 cancellation fee against your deposit. Please note you cannot cancel your contract after you have moved in.

Can I change my room if I move in and I don’t like it?
A: It is possible after six to eight weeks and subject to agreement with the Housing Officer in charge of your property to swap rooms but you will have to pay an administration fee to cover the cost of drawing up a new accommodation agreement.

What if I want to move out?
A: Your contract will usually last for 39 weeks, with slightly different contracts for PGCE students, non-EU Welcome Programme students and Semester A and B only students. Once you have moved in you are liable for the rent for the full term of your contract unless we find a replacement UEL tenant to take over your tenancy, who cannot already be a UEL resident. The exception to this is a student withdrawing from their course, whereby UEL will retain four weeks’ rent.

Do you have accommodation for couples and families? Unfortunately we do not have any accommodation suitable for couples and families. The accommodation provided is for single occupancy only. Therefore we recommend one member of the family comes to London prior to the start of the academic course to search for Private Sector Accommodation.
