How do I register with the doctor? The University encourages students to take responsibility for their own health. For general care under the National Health Service (NHS) students must register with a General Practitioner (GP) in the area in which they live. All students are strongly advised to register with a doctor as soon as possible. If you do not you may have problems seeing a doctor if medical treatment becomes necessary. The doctor must be close to where you live, because once you are registered, the GP agrees to visit you should an emergency arise and cannot do so if you do not live locally.
As part of Student Services the University runs a Health and Wellbeing Centre on each campus. (Docklands and Stratford). There is a Nurse available to give help and advice on all medical matters.
Each Health Centre has the services of a local doctor, who provides health care to those students registered with them. If you live on campus, or in the local vicinity, you can apply to register with the University GP. If you live further away the Health Centre can give you help and advice to find a local doctor.
What happens if I need assistance outside of office hours? Security Officers are present to carry out security and disciplinary duties. They are there for the benefit of the residents, but also act on behalf of the university's staff in their absence. They will contact the police or memebers of Residential Services if neccassary.
