These are truly exciting times for UEL. The 2012 Olympic project is transforming East London and will leave an extraordinary legacy for decades to come. Alongside this, UEL has also been transformed. Our £170 million development programme has brought a range of new facilities to our campuses, including 24/7 multimedia libraries, state-of-the-art clinics and a major new sports complex.
My vision for UEL is that of a university committed to excellence in teaching and research across a broad spectrum of disciplines. I believe that while education rightly serves to boost employability and enterprise, and applied research can demonstrate benefits for industry and business, learning and research are worth doing for their own sake. It is part of human nature to learn and explore and universities have a historically unique role in promoting that kind of intellectual endeavour.
Research is the foundation of all that we do here at UEL. As part of our commitment to strengthening our already impressive research-base, we have recently established new post-doctoral fellowships across disciplines within Humanities and Health and Social Sciences; launched a research development fund; invested in a research sabbatical scheme and a research internship scheme. Our aim is to continue to support our research community, from established researchers to early-career researchers and PhD students.
With our reputation as one of London’s most innovative and progressive educational institutions, our record of excellence in teaching and research, the dynamism and diversity of our student community and a culture that fosters creativity, learning and academic exploration, UEL is a university with the energy and vision to make a real difference in the world.
