Timetable for introducing the Research Excellence Framework (REF)

November 2007 to February 2008

Consultation on key elements of the framework and on bibliometric indicators.

In parallel, further work on developing bibliometric techniques.
July to December 2008 Substantial pilot on the bibliometrics involved in the proposed approach.

Spring to Summer 2009

  • Pilot of bibliometric indicators analysed.
  • Proposals developed for other aspects of the REF across all subjects.
  • Expert Advisory Groups met to advise on proposals.
  • Thee impact of proposals in terms of equality and diversity, sustainability and regulatory burden, assessed.
Autumn 2009 Consultation on all main features of the REF including operational details of the use of bibliometrics to inform peer reviews, use of other quantitative indicators, assessment of impact, subject boundaries and procedures for expert review.
Spring 2010

31 October 2013 Census date for staff eligible for selection

31 December 2013 End of publication period (cut-off point for publication of research outputs, and for outputs underpinning impact case studies).
2014 Panels assess submissions
December 2014 REF outcomes published
Spring 2015 Publication of submissions, panel overview reports and sub-profiles.
