Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

Picture of academic and graduate working together

The KTP programme was established over 30 years ago. It is funded by the Technology Strategy Board and works to increase knowledge transfer activity across the UK. A KTP project is a collaboration between an organisation, an academic (or team of academics) and a graduate (known as a KTP Associate). The Associate works within an organisation on a strategic project for between 1-3 years full time and the academic supports and steers that project for 0.5 days per week.

Benefits to academic members of staff

  • Good way to apply research in a commercial environment (KTP activity can be counted towards REF submissions)
  • Generates income for your school, approximately £17, 500 per year *
  • Good source for developing conference papers and additional research
  • Good way to network and build external contacts

The Technology Strategy Board will apply the following overarching criteria when assessing KTP proposals: Innovation, Challenge and Impact.
