The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) supports research within a variety of social science subjects in six research areas: economic affairs, education and human development, environment and planning, government and law, industry and employment, and social affairs. The ESRC has a wide range of research funding programmes which give out research funding based on competitions open to application at any time and competitions with closing dates.

ESRC’s new delivery plan demonstrates ESRC’s strategy to align its research strategy on three priority areas: Performance and Sustainable Growth, Influencing Behaviour and Informing Interventions, and A Vibrant and Fair Society. The ESRC, like the other Research Councils, will be focusing its funds on longer and larger grants that deliver ambitious and excellent research. As part of this, as of 1 February 2011, the small research grants, first grants, post-doc and mid-career fellowships schemes will be stopped, and the lower threshold for standard grants will be increased to £200,000. A new Future Leaders grant scheme replacing the post-doc fellowships will be introduced for funding future potential research leaders.
