The Refugee Council Archive is a reference only collection and items from the collection can therefore not be taken out on loan. We do permit the photocopying of Archive materials, subject to copyright and preservation restrictions outlined on this site and all photocopying can only be undertaken under the discretion of the Archivist
The Docklands Learning Resources Centre provides access to both black and white and colour photocopiers and this run on a self-service basis. The Archive can also provide a Document Supply Service for researchers and the items requested can either be collected from the Archive or posted to the researcher as requested. We do charge for our photocopying service and details of these charges are as follows:
Self Service Photocopying
To photocopy materials from the Archive, you will firstly need to complete a RED photocopying form and these are available in the Archive room. Please hand this to the Archivist or the member of staff in charge prior to copying the materials.
Our photocopiers operate on a card system and these can be purchased for £1 at the main LRC counter. These cards contain 50p of credit and can be further charged up by using the machines provided.
Basic black and white photocopying costs the equivalent of 5p per A4 sheet and 7p per A3 sheet. Colour copying rates are slightly more expensive.
Staff Copying Service and Document Supply
Archive staff can provide a Document Supply Service on request. The rates per page will be the same as for the self-service copying. and please contact us for further information. A Document Request Form will also need to be completed and these are available to download in PDF format by clicking here or alternatively please ask a member of staff in the Archives office..
Paying for Photocopying
Both the Archive and the Learning Resource Centre can accept either cash or a cheque. Unfortunately we cannot accept either credit or debit cards. Cheques, in pounds sterling, can be made payables to the University of East London .
The self-service card rechargers can accept most kinds of coin.
Due to the fragile nature of some of the materials held in the Collection, Archive staff may decide to restrict or prevent the photocopying of certain items in order to preserve them for future use. In these situations, a duplicate of the original may be provided for use. Please consult with the Archivist prior to photocopying if you have any doubts. Researchers are reminded to be considerate when photocopying materials as this process is ultimately harmful to the materials.
To try and protect items in the Collection from repeated photocopying, the Archive will only copy a maximum of 20 pages, or 10% of the book, whichever represents the smaller amount.
Copyright legislation as defined in the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 places strict legal restrictions on what researchers and students can copy for educational or personal use. These rules applying to the photocopying of Archival materials can be complex so please be careful when copying. Consequently, please try and follow the guidelines listed below when photocopying materials from the Archive and please consult the Archivist if you are uncertain of how to proceed. The following guidelines have been prepared by the Copyright Licensing Agency or CLA and a fuller description can be found in the LSS Student Guide to Copyright :
Further info rmation can be found by referring to UEL's online Copyright Guides and by referring to the web site of the Copyright Licensing Agency, (CLA). The CLA has also produced a set of User Guidelines which are available from the CLA website.
