Introduction

The following FAQ section will hopefully answer any questions that you may have in regard to The Refugee Council Archive at UEL. If you have a question that is not answered in this section, please contact the Archivist who will be happy to answer it for you. Any interesting questions will be added to this section in due course.

Access and Use

Q. Can the Archive be used by members of the public?

A. Yes, the Archive can be used by both staff and students of the University of East London and external researchers. We also welcome all non-UEL visitors who wish to use the Archive.

Q. I am an external user wishing to use the Archive, do I need to register in order to use the Collection?

A. No, there is no need to register. All we would recommend is that you contact the Archivist in advance of your visit, to make sure that there will be someone on site to help you when you arrive. Please see our Contacts Page for further info rmation.

Q. Can you give me directions on how to get to the Archive?

A. Yes, please visit our Directions Page for further info rmation.

The Archive

Q. Do you have an Online Catalogue that I can use to search items in The Refugee Council Archive at UEL?

A. Yes we do. Our online catalogue can be found at the following web address, http://www.uel.ac.uk/lls/ . The Archive is currently being retrospectively catalogued so not every item will currently be on the catalogue. Please contact the Archivist if you would like him to undertake a search on your behalf.

Q. Can I take items from the Archive out on loan?

A. Unfortunately not as we have a policy in place that all items in the Archive are to be reference only. However, please refer to the question below in regard to the UNHCR Audio-Visual materials.

Q. What is the situation in regard to the UNHCR Audio-Visual Archive?

A. Whilst the remainder of the Archive is reference only, it is possible to take items from the UNHCR Audio-Visual Archive. It is part of our agreement with UNHCR for the transfer of their audio-visual resources that we subsequently make them available for loan. A loan form will need to be completed and this can be obtained in the Archive and from this website – please refer to the UNHCR section of this site.

Photocopying

Q. Is it possible to photocopy items from the Archive?

A. Yes it is, subject to copyright restrictions. Please visit our Photocopying page for further information

Q. Can you tell me more about what copyright restrictions and how these apply to the Archive.

A. Yes, please visit our Copyright section for further information.

Dissertations

Q. I see that you hold all the Dissertations for the MA in Refugee Studies course, can I photocopy these?

A. Unfortunately not. Due to the copyright restrictions currently in force, the copying of student dissertations is not permitted.

Facilities

Q. Are there any toilets close to the Archive?

A. Yes, there are toilets available for public use in the Learning Resources Centre.

Q. Are there any shops or restaurants on the Docklands Campus?
