1.1 - Section 76 of the Further and Higher Education Act 1992 provides for the Privy Council to specify an institution as competent to grant awards to persons who:
1.2 - Such awards include degrees, diplomas, certificates, and other academic awards and distinctions, including honorary degrees. The power to grant awards extends to the authorising of other institutions to do so on our University's behalf.
1.3 - Section 76 of the 1992 Act lays out the following broad framework within which the University is empowered to grant awards:
"It shall be for the institution to determine in accordance with any relevant provisions of the instruments relating to or regulating the institution the courses of study or programmes of research, and the assessments, which are appropriate for the grant of any award and the terms and conditions on which any of the powers conferred under this section may be exercised."
1.4 - The University of East London decided to adopt its degree-awarding powers from the start of the 1992-93 academic session. The regulations that our University is required to make under Section 76 of the 1992 Act are contained in this manual, together with the general principles to which our University has subscribed in framing the regulations.
2.1 - Our University has in place a quality assurance system designed to assure the quality and standards of its programmes of study.
2.2 - The quality assurance procedures governing the validation, review and monitoring of programmes of study, and the maintenance of academic standards, are set out in the Quality Manual.
2.3 - Our University may enter into a range of collaborative partnerships for the delivery of programmes of study. The range and nature of these partnerships are defined in the Quality Manual.
