Brief biography

I am a senior lecturer working with first- and second-year trainees on the doctoral programme in counselling psychology. I am a chartered counselling psychologist with a special interest in working with people experiencing obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and social anxiety (SA). As a clinician in the NHS my work involves specialist psychological assessment and the provision of group cognitive behaviour therapy (GCBT) for OCD. I also facilitate a supervision group for other clinicians working with the client group in the trust. In the private sector I facilitate a CBT group for clients experiencing social anxiety and work with a range of clients individually. I draw extensively from my clinical experience when teaching here at UEL, as you will see when you participate in my experiential workshops relating to my special areas of interest in years 1 and 2.

Here at UEL I am the first-year course tutor and CBT module leader. I am extensively involved in the development and delivery of the clinical skills and cognitive behavioural therapy modules. These modules have been highly developed and are experiential in nature in order that you learn the skills you need through observed practice and feedback. Every year, feedback from trainees — to which we are highly responsive — has highlighted the value of our clinical consultation groups. In small groups you will learn to present cases and use supervision appropriately. Often these small groups have been described as a turning point for trainees in terms of putting theory into practice. My previous experience of running personal development groups has also been utilised into the programme in direct response to trainee feedback. During your training experience I may also meet you in the role of your personal tutor or research supervisor.

Current research and publications

I am interested in process and outcome research concerning client’s experience of therapy. I carried out a quantitative study looking into the benefits of Time Limited Cognitive Behavioural Group Therapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and my current interests concern the development of qualitative process research for this client group.
