Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 Highlights

Background

The UEL School of Psychology submitted the research of fdfd to four RAE(2008) Units of Assessment (UoAs): twelve staff (10.2 FTEs) to the ‘Psychology’ UoA (UoA44); four staff to ‘Allied Health Professions and Studies’ (UoA12); five staff to ‘Sociology’ (UoA41); and two staff to ‘Social Work and Social Policy & Administration’ (UoA40).

Results — Highlights

  • UEL’s position in the Times league table for research has improved by 28 places from RAE2001 (96th) to RAE2008 (68th) [of 132 institutions].
  • Across all UoAs to which UEL made a submission, seven out of nine are judged to have world class researchers in their midst.
  • 85 per cent of the research submission to the Psychology UoA was judged to be of international quality (i.e., 2∗ or 3∗).
  • Of the 48 journal papers (‘outputs’) we submitted to the Psychology UoA(44) in RAE2008, 97.9 per cent of these were judged to be of at least 2∗ quality, i.e., ‘quality that is recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour’.
  • The proportion of our submission to the Psychology UoA that has been judged to be of international quality has increased significantly between RAE2001 and RAE2008: in RAE2001 for the Psychology UoA two-thirds of our submission was of ‘…quality that equates to… levels of national excellence…, possibly showing evidence of international excellence'. In RAE2008, 85 per cent of our submission to UoA44, i.e., over three quarters, has been rated to be of ‘...quality that is recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour’, an improvement of at least 52 per cent.
  • The UEL School of Psychology is home to psychologists who have produced research between 2001 and 2008 of international quality, and this high quality is consistent, for example, through the 48 journal papers that were submitted to the RAE2008 UoA44.
  • Two UoAs to which Psychology staff were submitted contained elements that were judged to be world class in quality, i.e., 4∗, specifically, ‘Sociology’ and ‘Allied Health Professions and Studies’.
