Professional Placements/Practice Learning Opportunities

In Year 1, trainees will attend placements for approximately 100 days. These will be arranged by the Programme Team and will take account of the trainee’s existing knowledge and experience and where they live, as far as possible. There will be placements in a range of educational settings, Social Care, Children’s Trusts, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and Educational Psychology Services.

The purpose of these placements is to provide trainees with further experiences that will add to their knowledge and insight into a range of settings and current issues within educational and child psychology. During these placements, trainees will be expected to complete supervised pieces of work, including problem-based learning assignments and developing a research proposal.

In Year 2, trainees will be employed as an Assistant Educational Psychologist by a Local Authority or other appropriate organisation and will be undertaking work on behalf of their employer for 60 per cent of the time. The work will include projects and research work, reflecting the priorities of the employer as well as taking account of the programme requirements for assessment. Trainees will be expected to complete a group research project and an organisational change project in Year 2.

In Year 3, the Assistant Educational Psychologist will spend 80 per cent of their time working for a Local Authority or other appropriate organisation, spending the remaining time engaged in university-based activities and independent study. It is during Year 3 that trainees will be completing the research thesis.

Tutors

The programme team comprises:

Fieldwork Tutors will be appointed in Educational Psychology Services to secure and monitor placements and provide feedback and guidance to trainees. They will also assess the trainee’s progress and provide written reports to the trainee and Programme Director.

The planning and day-to-day running of the programme are the responsibility of the Programme Director and the tutor team. Professor Gersch has direct responsibility for the running of the programme, selection procedures, quality assurance and complaints procedure.

Programme Development

There is a Programme Operations Committee comprising tutors, nominated trainees and Senior and Principal Educational Psychologists from Educational Psychology Services. The Programme Operations Committee meets once a term to discuss larger-scale issues related to the programme and educational and child psychology training in general. The ongoing quality enhancement includes regular trainee evaluations and obtaining the views of trainees.

The Graduate School

The Graduate School is integral to the experience of all postgraduate research students. The remit of the school is three fold: to provide a quality-assured infrastructure and focus for research activity across the institution, to support students as well as academic staff in the production, development and application of new knowledge, and to enable research students to fulfil their potential and contribute toward institutional, national and international research. To these ends, the school seeks to foster a strong research community whilst preparing students for the rigours of academic or professional practice.

The Graduate School offers students a comprehensive support service from the point of application through to conferment of their award, as well as advising on funding and offering research skills training.
