Programme summary for MA Working with Groups

About the programme

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a number of programmes in partnership with the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust. The programmes are delivered at the world-renowned Tavistock Clinic in London. The Trust is the UK’s leading provider of multi-disciplinary postgraduate training in mental health and is a major provider of clinical services.

The Trust has a national and international reputation as a centre of excellence in the therapeutic treatment of complex and serious mental health disorders, clinical training, consultancy, research
and scholarship.

Programme structure

Three years part-time, attendance each Friday from 9.15am to1.15pm in term time for Years 1 and 2. Every third Friday from 9.15am to 11.45am for 10 sessions in Year 3.

Career opportunities

The programme is aimed at those working with groups or in groups or teams – teachers, social workers, nurses, probation officers, clinical and educational psychologists, psychiatrists (both community and hospital based), psychotherapists and counsellors.

Admission

Applicants are required to be working with groups in the public or independent sectors (on either an employed or voluntary basis). This will be in a context where they can develop their thinking and practice during the programme and from which they can bring examples of their work for discussion and reflection.

Applications are encouraged from people in a wide variety of professional settings including social work, education, health services (both community and hospital based) voluntary organisations and forensic services.

Successful applicants will demonstrate the potential for a capacity to reflect on themselves and on their work.
