Textile Design is an exciting and challenging area which encompasses a wide range of creative disciplines from furnishing fabric design, interior artefacts, wall coverings, fashion fabrics and accessories through gift wrap and card design. The programme is staffed by practising designers, all with a broad range of experience in Textile and Surface Decoration.
Do you have an interest in working in Printed Textile Design and Surface Decoration programmes. The University will involve you in working on 'live' projects in:
Level 1 - At Level 1 we introduce students to the core subjects that you will need as a textile designer,: Colour, Design Prediction and Forecasting, Repeat Structures, Silk Screen Printing and dyeing, CAD and a Personal Visual Research Programme. As part of this we visit museums and galleries, to sensitise you to the work of contemporary designers.
Level 2 - Having completed the first year, students are now ready to embark on a variety of design projects, some of which are set and run by the Design industry. The second year will involve you designing fashion fabrics, furnishing fabrics, wallpapers, household fabrics (duvets and sheeting), cards and Gift Wrap. You will also enter the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) which is a National Design Competition for students on Design programmes. All projects are designed to encourage students to develop a strong individual identity within their work. Throughout the year there are CAD classes for all students. You will also undertake a Professional Practice programme where you will learn about design costing, and pricing, how to find an agent, how to sell your work, design copyright etc.
Level 3 - At this point students have the option to specialise in either fashion fabric design or furnishing fabric designs. However it is possible to work across both areas as this will give you a broader portfolio of work. The final year consists of a 'Major Project' whereby students write their own programme in consultation with the staff. Professional Practice Project (at Level 2) and produce illustrated design brochures/ cv's business cards to prepare for exhibiting at New Designers, a design fair in London which is a 'shop window' for our students once they graduated.
