Why study Early Childhood Studies?

The Early Childhood Studies programme at the University of East London is designed to prepare students to work with children aged 0-8 years. It provides a critical, comprehensive and interdisciplinary preparation for multi-professional work in Early Childhood.

You will be given the opportunity to gain knowledge and undertaking of the interdisciplinary nature of Early Childhood Studies and of the structural, institutional, personal and cultural systems and ideas which affect the experience and construction of childhood.

What will I study?

Early Childhood Studies uses an holistic approach to the discipline. You will have the opportunity of studying modules about the philosophy, psychology and sociology of children and childhood and relating these to issues in education, health & social welfare.

By the end of the course you should be able to

demonstrate knowledge and understanding and practical skills relevant to academic study and professional practice in Early Childhood settings;
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of Early Childhood Studies and of the structural, institutional, personal and cultural systems and ideas which affect the experience and construction of childhood;
demonstrate knowledge and understanding about physical and intellectual development in Early Childhood and Early Childhood provision and organisations;

Can I study a Combined Honours Programme as a Part-time degree?

All our Combined Honours Programmes can be studied on a Part-time or Full-time basis. As a Part-time student, you will study the same degree programme, but at a slower pace. You will study up to 4 modules per year (instead of 6 as a full-time student). You will find that some subject areas offer evening taught modules to aid flexibility. Some Education modules are available for evening study.

Early Childhood Studies provides a route into a wide range of careers, for example; early years educator/teacher, childcare practitioner/ manager of a service relevant to children, fieldworker for children's charity, research officer, project/development/community work, holiday rep for children, road safety officer, child protection advisor, Education Welfare Officer, home-school liaison officer, regional organiser for after-school care, manager of private pay nursery.
