Combined Honours Programmes

Community Arts Practice (Major, Joint or Minor)

Campus: Docklands

Why study Community Arts Practice as part of a 2-Subject Degree?

The particular focus of this programme is upon performing arts in the urban, multicultural context of East London. The field of community arts is a huge one, and we hope that during your three years you will begin to get to grips with the issues, debates and practices involved in developing performance work with and for diverse audiences and participants. The rich and complex networks of practitioners, communities and spaces that you will come into contact with in your three years on the programme will, we hope, provide you with a challenging and exciting context in which to develop your work. The physical journeys that you make across the landscape of the city will, we hope, allow you to explore other cultural and philosophical landscapes which will develop your creativity and commitment to your work as an artist. You will be encouraged to challenge assumptions about traditional practices in the performing arts. We emphasise communication and collaboration between client groups and community arts practitioners, with the aim of identifying and realising shared goals. Live projects and performances will enable you to appreciate the necessity for meaningful dialogue and mutual responsibility within your group. An emphasis is placed on building flexible improvisation skills, self-management and strategic thinking. You will also explore core issues in cultural policy, cultural politics, urban regeneration and community development

What will I study?

An interdisciplinary and inclusive approach to the performing arts.  You will have access to industry-standard resources and numerous opportunities to connect with a wide range of professional artists and companies.  The interdisciplinary approach includes improvisation, devising, cross-disciplinary collaboration and work with video and multimedia in diverse community settings.  You will be joining in production and performance linked to cutting-edge critical enquiry and cultural theory based in a world-class research rated School linked to one of the most exciting networks of artistic collaboration in the country.

Which modules will I study?

You can view a full guide to the modules you have to study as part of your chosen pathway, along with a full range of option modules available by viewing the Single & Combined Honours Programmes Guide for Community Arts Practice

Can I study a Combined Honours Programme as a Part-time degree?

All our Combined Honours Programmes can be studied on a Part-time or Full-time basis. As a Part-time student, you will study the same degree programme, but at a slower pace. You will study up to 4 modules per year (instead of 6 as a full-time student).

What career opportunities are available?

Many students choose to seek employment in the cultural industries upon completion of the programme and have been successful in gaining work as workshop leaders, administrators, writers, performers and film-makers. Depending on your module choices, you may be able to proceed to specialist postgraduate training in drama, education, dance, music or arts management upon completion of the BA. Specific skills in performing arts, together with the transferable skills (common skills) that you will develop within the modules, will equip you for employment in Community Arts, Arts Management, Funding and Administration, Performance in Education and Small-Scale Touring.
