The MRes prepares you to undertake advanced research in professional, industrial and academic contexts. It also provides a vital foundation for doctoral research. It enables you to develop the full portfolio of key research skills which you will need if you wish to pursue a career requiring you to do research or make use of research in your job, inside or outside academia.
It requires you to apply these skills in the completion of a substantial research project of your own choice.
Skills central to the professional conduct or rigorous appraisal of research are transferable to a wide range of high-profile job situations. Good researchers are expert project managers. Good managers in public and private organisations demonstrate excellence in understanding of the research they need to commission and use in strategic management. Businesses and organisations can get vital research carried out through sponsorship of staff on the MRes programme or sponsorship of high-calibre students selected by UEL.
An honours degree or equivalent professional qualification is usually the minimum requirement. Students may be admitted with equivalent professional experience or other relevant qualifications, at the Programme Leaders discretion. In some cases an interview may also be used to help determine that this is the right programme for you. A reference indicating capacity and suitability for academic study is always required.
The graduate School website uel.ac.uk/grasdschool/ provides answers to frequently asked questions and can also direct potential students to sources of relevant information such has costs of study, student accommodation and UEL study facilities.
In the case of applicants whose first language is not English, and then an overall IELTS of 6.5 (or equivalent) is required. International qualifications will be checked for appropriate matriculation to UK Higher Education postgraduate programmes.
Students that apply to enter stages of the programme may be admitted through normal Accreditation of Experiential Learning (AEL) or Accreditation of Certificated Learning (ACL) processes. Therefore such applicants must be able to demonstrate and evidence that they have the required learning outcomes as listed in the modules for which they are seeking exemption.
The MRes may be completed in 1 year full time or two years part-time. For students starting in semester 2, however the programme duration is 15 months (full-time) or 27 months (part-time) Students starting in Semester 2 will however
You are required to complete one compulsory module in essential research skills which introduces you to the processes of carrying out research, how research is planned and implemented.
You must also choose at least one module from a selection of 4 possible advanced research skills modules provided by the Graduate School and complete a further 2 modules which may be drawn from the remaining advanced research skills modules or any other subject-based Master’s programme at UEL available to you.
Finally, you will complete a substantive research project dissertation
You may also take just the essential research skills module and any one of the advanced research skills modules available in the Graduate School in order to obtain a PG Certificate or these two plus any 2 other available Masters level modules to obtain a PG Diploma.
You will be supported in your learning by module –based lectures and seminars/workshops.
You will also have the opportunity to attend highly specialised research and transferable skills workshops and access high-quality online learning resources.
You will be guided through the programme and dissertation by staff with considerable expert practical and teaching experience in the field of research. Your dissertation will be guided also by an expert in your chosen field of study.
All modular assessment is by end-of-module coursework.
Your research project dissertation is assessed against professional research quality standards.
Students can achieve a pass, a pass with merit or a pass with distinction
The ability to undertake, commission appraise or understand research is a critical component of many high-level careers across all sectors of employment.
Your research project dissertation can be devoted to conduct of a real research exercise problem in any work setting. In suitable cases, UEL may be able to secure organisational sponsorship to cover study fees and some living expenses.

Each student is allocated a personal tutor who will help you to navigate the programme and provide personal support and advice needed to complete the study programme.
The tutor on each module will provide study support and individual tutorials to support coursework and portfolio preparation.
For the dissertation module, students are allocated 2 tutors, one from the teaching team and one from a school at UEL possessing the necessary subject area expertise. These tutors are jointly responsible for guiding students through the selection of an appropriate research topic, choice and implementation of research methodology and write up in a thesis.
Students with special study needs are identified and support arrangements provided by the Disability Dyslexia and Access Centre.
This programme is designed to give you the opportunity to:
Knowledge
Thinking skills
Subject-based practical skills
Skills for life and work (general skills)
All programmes are credit-rated to help you to understand the amount and level of study that is needed.
One credit is equal to 10 hours of directed study time (this includes everything you do e.g. lecture, seminar and private study).
The overall credit-rating of this programme is at M level:
180 for Masters, 60 for PGCert, 120 for PGDip.
Already covered above
The teaching year is divided into two semesters of roughly equal length. A typical student registered in a full-time attendance mode will study two 30 credit modules per semester and a typical student registered in a part-time attendance mode will study one or two modules per semester. Registration for the dissertation takes place in the final semester of study although preparatory work for it is distributed throughout the programme and its component taught modules.
You may start this programme in September or February.
The core taught module must be taken first and runs in both semesters so will be taken by all students in the first semester of study, regardless of start-point in the year.
Full-time students can take any other taught module in their first semester full-timers take their other 2 taught modules in the second semester and complete their dissertation within 12 months of starting the programme.
Part-timers may only take the core taught module in their first semester and then one other taught module in each of the following 3 semesters with the dissertation being submitted at the end of the last semester of study.

This is done through a process of programme approval which involves consulting academic experts including some subject specialists from other institutions.
The quality of this programme is monitored each year through evaluating:
Drawing on this and other information, programme teams undertake the annual Review and Enhancement Process which is co-ordinated at School level and includes student participation. The process is monitored by the Quality and Standards Committee.
Once every six years an in-depth review of the whole field is undertaken by a panel that includes at least two external subject specialists. The panel considers documents, looks at student work, speaks to current and former students and speaks to staff before drawing its conclusions. The result is a report highlighting good practice and identifying areas where action is needed.
This programme has a programme committee comprising all relevant teaching staff, student representatives and others who make a contribution towards the effective operation of the programme (e.g. library/technician staff). The committee has responsibilities for the quality of the programme. It provides input into the operation of the Review and Enhancement Process and proposes changes to improve quality. The programme committee plays a critical role in the quality assurance procedures.
The standard of this programme is monitored by at least one external examiner. External examiners have two primary responsibilities:
