This programme provides you with a robust appreciation of the distinct and integrated measures taken by managers and specialists to deal with the issue of risk management.
It covers the major areas of financial, operational and enterprise risk and pays due attention to the added international dimensions brought about by globalisation. You will also be trained in strategies of risk reduction, financing and management – both internally and inter-organisationally.
The programme is primarily focused at career preparation and pre-experience in both specialist and general management roles. However it can also enhance existing skills and knowledge and open up possibilities for career progression or specialisation.
Risks bring opportunities and this innovative and highly-regarded MSc programme explores a field that is fast becoming an essential strategic arm for industrial, commercial and governmental organisations. You gain a sound theoretical understanding of risk management in the worlds of finance, enterprise and operations, as well as gaining practical knowledge to enable you to judge risk, reduce its impact and to skilfully finance it. Throughout the programme you develop skills and capability through knowledge application in real-world and simulated situations. This provides you with competencies for immediate entry into career situations.
The one-year programme is offered on a full-time basis with the option of September or February start. It is generally also available on a part-time basis (based on student numbers). There are four core modules focusing on managing operational risks, financing risks, measuring and modelling risks and strategic management of enterprise risks. Once these modules are completed you prepare a dissertation/applied project. Delivery is through a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops, skills-based and lab sessions. Assessment is by coursework and group presentations.
This is a vocational programme with applications to a variety of risk management and strategy-focused careers, including finance, auditing, business development, corporate risk, insurance, consultancy, product development, government and disaster response. It also has relevance in general and specialist management roles.
Validation Plans: The programme of MSc Risk Management is recognised both by the Institute of Risk Management (IRM) and Institute of Operational Risk (IOR). Currently we are in the process of acquiring accreditation from these organisations.
