This programme equips you with both practical and theoretical knowledge of specialist areas of medical microbiology. The cutting edge of biology research is at the molecular level, using techniques such as genomics and proteomics, leading to an increased understanding of how micro-organisms cause disease and how this knowledge can be applied therapeutically. These areas are covered in depth, together with training in research skills. This programme is run by the School of Health Sport and Bioscience.
This programme is designed for students wishing to pursue a career in medical microbiology research. Careers are available in the NHS and Health Protection Agency, in academic research at universities and research institutes, and in pharmaceutical companies. Opportunities also exist in areas such as scientific sales and clinical sales management.
