This NEW masters degree focuses on the topics of culture and performance, national and diasporic dance practices, dance ethnography, choreography, practice as research, writing about dance practices in the urban environment, the different forms and styles of writing about dance, writing and performance as critical tools, critical choreographic methods, study of important contemporary choreographers, social and political themes in dance, and the relationship between theory and practice in dance studies.
Staff are involved in a range of research, such as South African dance theatre, dance and digital performance, and global bboy/bgirl culture. In addition to our full time lecturers and visiting lecturers, we also have frequent guest artists and professional dance artists teaching various techniques and styles.
Our MA Dance offers a unique postgraduate programme combining academic study in performance with a practice-based approach to performance. You will have the opportunity to learn cross-cultural research, ethnography and choreography. The programme also benefits from the input of visiting dancers and choreographers, while dance companies and artists act as mentors for students. This programme is taught in the evenings and is available for both full- and part-time study.
The MA Dance is offered both full- and part-time. Teaching is usually in the evenings.
Students take one or two modules a semester and there is a dissertation project to be taken over the final semester.
MA Dance students can work in close collaboration other MA programmes in the Performing Arts field.
This programme will equip you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to work as a dance researcher, dance/performance art practitioner, creative writer, teacher or leader in
the dance community. You will be provided with the means to produce your own work and find work in the wider arena, through the involvement of working professionals throughout the programme. Final degree shows will act as a showcase for dancers.
The programme leader and other staff teaching on this programme will provide academic guidance and supervision throughout the period of study. Advice will be available from administrative staff in the School and the University on accommodation, finance, etc. Pre-sessional and sessional language support may be provided where necessary. Students will have access to the University library and facilities.
Admission to the programme is by audition and interview. Graduates are usually expected to have gained a 2:1 in their undergraduate degree. Special provision is made for the interviewing of international students who are unable to come to the UK for an audition or interview. All international students will be required to have an IELTS score of 7 with an average of 6 in all sectors.
