Programme summary for MSc Biomedical Science

Accredited PROGRAMME

About the programme

This programme equips you with knowledge of both the practical and theoretical aspects of specialist areas of biomedical science: clinical chemistry, medical microbiology, cellular pathology and haematology. The programme is designed for students with non-accredited degree qualifications who wish to start careers as biomedical scientists, and those in the field seeking career progression. This programme is run by the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience.

Programme structure

  • One year full time or two years part time for MSc and PG Diploma.
  • One year part time for PG Certificate.
  • Part time students study the Biology of Disease modules in year 1 and the option module and research skills modules in year 2. The project is carried out mainly in year 2, but may be started in year 1.
  • Taught modules are delivered in a semesterised system, with semesters running from
  • September to January, and February to June. The research projects will run through the summer period

Career opportunities

Many graduates of this degree enter careers as biomedical scientists in the NHS or related agencies such as the Health Protection Agency and Blood Transfusion Service. Biomedical scientists are also sought after in industry, and there are opportunities in universities, research institutes and other organisations. Careers are also available in areas such as scientific sales and clinical data management.

Admission

For entry to this programme, students are required to have qualifications equivalent to a honours degree from a UK university in a relevant subject or experience. For overseas students there is a requirement for an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher (or equivalent), TOEFL score of 650 or an equivalent. Applicants whose qualifications do not conform to these criteria may be admitted to the programme at the admission tutors discretion which will normally involve an interview.
