At the Petchey Centre for Entrepreneurship we recognise the need for solid research-based understanding of the processes involved in generating successful new businesses.
We are therefore engaged in a research programme exploring themes of interest to policy-makers, funders of businesses and the academic community in the UK and abroad. Some of this research is action-based in collaboration with local SMEs.
Themes under current or planned investigation include Black and Minority Ethnic Business Growth Trajectories (building on UEL’s pioneering Black Business Observatory), Faith and Entrepreneurship, Women as Entrepreneurs, the Export Orientation of Regional SMEs and Regeneration through Entrepreneurship.
A programme of research seminars is held, and the Centre invites applications for PhD study. We also have a scheme for visiting scholars.

Graham Hoffman
Graham Hoffman, a Computer Games Design student, scooped £10,000 when he won E-factor 2008, in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style final of the Knowledge Dock ‘E-Factor’ business plan competition.
Graham impressed a panel of industry experts with his idea for a ‘Console Café’ to host high-profile, international computer games contests. The prize money enabled Graham to develop his idea into a fully functional business. At the time Graham said: “It’s like a dream come true. I really can’t imagine anything better than being given the chance to start up my own business.”
