The University of East London’s (UEL) acclaimed free public lecture series continues with Professor Steve Trevillion, the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences talk on The Idea of Prevention in Social Work: Examining the past and imagining the future.
The lecture in October at UEL’s Docklands Campus takes into account the recent harrowing case of Baby P that shook the foundations of social work nation-wide and it promises to be an important and controversial one.
Professor Trevillion will look at the current concerns in the failure to protect children and the broader historical context. The lecture will also develop arguments first put forward by him in 2008 in a chapter for a book The Art of Social Work Practice.
Professor Trevillion said: “This lecture will be of interest to anyone involved with or concerned about preventive social work. The media spotlight has been on services for children and families, yet the debate about the nature and scope of prevention affects all aspects of social work.
“I intend to show that many of our basic assumptions about preventive social work are open to question and that the process of redefining prevention may eventually lead to a new and more realistic understanding of the nature of social work practice.”
There will also be a chance for the public to ask questions before a set panel. Panel members include Professor Steve Trevillion and Professors Stephen Briggs and Andrew Cooper from UEL and Ms Jenny Owens, Director of Adult Social Services at Essex County Council.
Professor Trevillion has a strong commitment to social work education. He has been the Head of Social Work Education at the General Social Care Council where he took a leading role in developing the Post-Qualifying Framework for Social Work Education and Training.
Social work education is one of the key ways in which UEL’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences is developing further links with a wide range of organisations in East London.
The lecture will take place on Thursday 15 October 2009 at 5.15pm at the West Building Lecture Theatre of UEL's Docklands Campus. For further details and to confirm your attendance contact our events team on 020 8223 2884 or events@uel.ac.uk
