Expert driving instructors are taking lessons in coaching psychology at the University of East London (UEL), with the aim of improving the way instructors communicate with learner drivers.
Coaching guru and former motor racing champion Sir John Whitmore recently joined 20 members of the Advanced Driving Instructors in a 2-day intensive course in coaching psychology at UEL’s School of Psychology in Stratford.
In the autumn, UEL is launching a Certificate in Coaching for Driving Instructors. The programme has been developed by Dr Jonathan Passmore, who has been working with the Metropolitan Police driving school at Hendon in developing this programme.
Sir John Whitmore said: “Conventional driving instruction does not address the very serious problem of the disproportionate fatality rate caused by young inexperienced male drivers. A coaching approach deals with these mental and emotional issues throughout their learning time, and is designed to build their sense of responsibility to themselves and to others. Driving instructors urgently need to gain these skills.”
Sir John is the author of the best selling coaching book, Coaching for Performance, which has sold half a million copies in over 20 languages. He has also worked with leading multi-national corporations world-wide to establish coaching management cultures and leadership programmes. He is an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration at the University of East London.
Jonathan Passmore is the author of several books on coaching including Excellence in coaching and leads the UK’s first Masters Programme in coaching psychology.
The School of Psychology at UEL is one of the UK’s leading centres for postgraduate professional psychology training, offering specialist programmes in Clinical, Counselling, Educational, Occupational, Coaching and Positive Psychology.
