UEL shows heart with new green campaign

Green Move Out campaign

The University of East London (UEL) has teamed up with the British Heart Foundation Shops (BHF) as part of its annual Green Move Out campaign – an initiative encouraging students to donate unwanted items to go towards the fight against heart disease, and help fund the BHF’s life-saving research.

The campaign will run from Monday, 13 May until Sunday, 16 June 2013.  When the student halls are vacated this summer, it is inevitable that many belongings will be left behind, and this new scheme will see that this surplus goes towards fighting heart disease. The BHF are providing clothing banks, donation bins and BHF collection bags at key drop off points located outside Docklands Campus Halls of Residences.

UEL and the BHF are urging both students and staff to raid their wardrobes and donate any items that are no longer wanted. BHF shops are always in need of clothing, shoes, accessories, CDs, DVDs, books, kitchenware and small electrical items. If students have any pairs of glasses they no longer use, these can be donated too, via the specific spectacle collection bins.

Emily Hamilton, Sustainability Officer at UEL, said: “This is the perfect opportunity for our students to be both charitable and environmentally friendly with their unwanted items. We would strongly encourage students and staff to look out for the red collection bins, and take advantage of this convenient new service by having a clear out and donating their unwanted items.”

Julie Paffett at the British Heart Foundation said: “We’re excited to be working alongside the University of East London to encourage students to donate their unwanted goods to us. This scheme will be a huge help to our shops in east London, and I’d like to encourage students to get involved and support the new scheme.”

Red collection bins for the Halls of Residence will be located at seven key drop off points. These include: Ailsa House; Clare House; between Jamilah House and Felix House; and Kwame House.

For the East halls for Residences, they will be located at the following places: Outside Aqua East; between Marley and Redbridge halls; and Shepherds and Templars halls. Additional crockery collection points will be set up in the Clare House Laundry room and at Aqua East.

Last year, the goods collected totalled 3.4 tonnes and this year UEL is expecting up to six tonnes. In order to properly manage all these donations, UEL are looking for student volunteers to support the scheme by monitoring the collection points. All volunteers will be offered a free training session on sustainable resource management, accredited by the Chartered Institute of Waste Management, and will receive a certificate to acknowledge their hard work.
