
UEL Chair of the Board of Governors, Mark Stephens, CBE has today been inaugurated as the Chairman of the Commonwealth Lawyers’ Association (CLA) at their annual conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
Founded on a Human Rights charter, the CLA is an international organisation, which exists to promote and maintain the rule of law throughout the Commonwealth by ensuring that an independent and efficient legal profession, with the highest standards of ethics and integrity, serves the people of the Commonwealth.
Mark has undertaken some of the highest profile cases in the UK and abroad having litigated in countries as diverse as Anguilla, Antigua, Cyprus, France, India, Iraq, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Samoa, Singapore and the USA.
Mark Stephens said of the appointment:
“I am honoured to be inaugurated as the Chairman for the Commonwealth Lawyers’ Association. It is a fantastic body with whom I have enjoyed working with for over thirty years. In my new role I will begin by predominantly focussing on the decriminalisation of homosexuality across the Commonwealth; the abolition of the death penalty and the independence of lawyers; the independence of the Judiciary; and corporate Governance and transparency through the Commonwealth. I am an advocate for Human Rights and look forward to beginning my new role as Chairman of the CLA and making a difference.”
