Wednesday saw history in the making for UEL, as not only did the university secure its first trophy success, but it went on to bring home the winner’s medals in every team game in which it competed: men and women's basketball, men’s football, netball and men’s volleyball.
With ambitions of being the best University in London for sport by 2015, and having never recorded a single BUCS cup before Wednesday, the rapid progression and success of the students was an especially proud moment for UEL Director of Sport, Davis Cosford, he said:
“This day goes down as Wonderful Wednesday, in true Olympic style, as UEL students swept the board at the BUCS cup finals. As the Director of Sport I have been amazed at the energy, spirit, passion and teamwork of our students, and I am proud to be associated with them and UEL. All our student clubs and teams have performed admirably this year, and the cup success is the icing on the cake.”
Both the football and the netball teams faced opposition from higher tiers, while the basketball and volleyball, along with the football team, faced finals which were held at tough away venues.
Several members of the men’s basketball team are elite scholars, whilst women’s netball final ‘most valuable player’, Rachel James, is also a UEL elite scholar.
UEL’s Dean of the School of Arts and Digital Industries, Professor Catherine Harper, who attended the momentous match to present the winners with their medals, said: “I couldn’t be prouder of the UEL sports people today; they are a credit to the school.”
