BUCS Championships

(UEL's 4x200m silver medal relay team)

The most exciting crop of elite sports athletes ever assembled at UEL scooped an impressive collection of eight medals at the recent British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships – a tally that rounds off the most successful period for the University to date.

Coming hot on the heels of a gold medal haul at the BUCS Rowing Championships, the Athletics Indoor Championships in Sheffield presented UEL with its stiffest challenge of the season so far. Following a more than convincing victory in the qualifying heat of the men’s 4 x 200m, UEL’s quartet of Andre Fernandez, Lumar Sylvester, Lloyd King and Dele Onifade, put in a blistering performance in the final to clinch silver – no mean feat considering Loughborough University – the UK’s top sports university – came first to win gold.

With little time to soak up the excitement of the relay final, Thalosand Tshireletso gave UEL something to cheer about again, as he won bronze in the triple jump final with a final leap of 15.07 metres.

In other events, Julia Scardone and Stephen Kent won a bronze and silver medal respectively at the Judo Championships; Sam Bezzina fought his way to win silver in the -60kg category of the Boxing Championships, while Anna Fitzpatrick Marshall Tutu and Johnny Parkes picked up gold medals for their outstanding performances at the BUCS Tennis Championships.

David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL, said: “I am so proud of our elite athletes’ performances at the BUCS Championships. To come away with eight medals is a marvelous achievement, and testament to the fantastic array of sporting talent we now possess at UEL. This clearly shows we are moving in the right direction as we bid to become London’s best university for sport by 2015.

"UEL is a great place to study, but you can also follow your sporting ambitions at the same time, with the superb support and facilities we have on offer here”.
