Indoor rowing

More than 120 young people from London recently took part in a thrilling indoor rowing challenge at SportsDock.

Hosted by the University of East London and London Youth Rowing (LYR), competitors from secondary schools and further education colleges in Barking, Bexley, Dagenham, Hackney and Hounslow went head to head in individual heats over 1,000 metres.

As part of the event, careers advisors were on hand to offer professional guidance about jobs in the sports industry, while UEL’s School of Health, Sport and Bioscience set up a special psychometric testing area for students.

Zayra Aslam and Aysha Butta, who attend Plashet School in Newham, said: “It was a real challenge, but lots of fun. We believe this is a great event that should be cherished by all schools in Britain.”

The Director of Sport at Barking Abbey School said: “We are delighted at winning the relay race. I am very proud of all the kids and impressed with how well they worked together.”

Rowing is currently one of UEL’s focus sports and a key part of its bid to become London’s best university for sport by 2015.
