The University of East London hosted the launch of CAMAC Design’s 2013 Student Wallpaper Design Competition this week. CAMAC Design is a company, which builds links between new designers, looking to enter the creative industries and established professionals.
The event; introduced by Catherine Harper, Dean of the School of Arts and Digital Industries; gave students and tutors from UEL, along with guests from Morley College, the opportunity to hear two lectures from acclaimed wallpaper and textile historian Mary Schoeser.
Frank Cockerill, international wallpaper industry specialist, from Neu Kaliss Spezialpaper in Germany, also spoke at the event.
Now in its fifth year, the competition creates opportunities for second year textiles students to design their own wallpapers, and if selected see them displayed in an established Gallery.
Founder of CAMAC Design, Caroline McNamara, said: “Working in collaboration with both tutors and leading exponents from the world of design, we aim to offer opportunities for students to strengthen their personal and professional development before stepping into the commercial arena. We are delighted that UEL has hosted this event today - many thanks to Catherine Harper, Emma Carey (organiser and textiles lecturer), and their colleagues.”
Catherine Harper, Dean of the School of Arts and Digital Industries, said: “We are very happy to welcome CAMAC Design, and to host their student wallpaper design competition. We have some extremely talented textiles students here at UEL, and in a particularly tough market place, it is great to see organisations like CAMAC supporting and encouraging those students who are looking for work opportunities in this particular specialism.”
