UEL boxer delivers knockout performance to reach last four of national competition

Thursday 15 November 2012

Sam Bezzina

Sam Bezzina, an elite sports scholarship student at UEL, has reached the semi-finals of a national boxing competition.

Sam, who is a first year student studying Sport and Exercise Science, competed in last weekend’s National Ambition Boxing Championships (NABCs) in the Class C tournament.

Fighting for West Ham Boys Amateur Boxing Club in the 57-60kg category, Sam faced stiff opposition in the form of Lewis Adams, fighting out of Essex’s Holland Shore Boxing Club. Despite an encouraging start from Adams, the UEL student proved too strong for his opponent, and emerged victorious following a flurry of uppercuts and hooks.

Speaking to UEL after his quarter-final bout, Sam said: “It was a really tough fight, but I would put it up there as one of my best performances of the season. I feel really confident now going into the semi-finals.”

David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL, said: “Sam is one of our new sports scholarship students, and he is a genuinely exciting prospect. Boxing is one of our focus sports here at UEL, so it is really pleasing to see Sam progress to the last four of a national competition. We wish him the best of luck in his forthcoming semi-final.”

The semi-finals will take place in Wales on Saturday, 24 November.
