UEL and Leyton Orient kick off new partnership

Monday 26 November 2012

Leyton Orient

The University of East London (UEL) and Leyton Orient Football Club have joined forces in an exciting partnership.

Both parties recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). As part of the agreement, UEL sports science students will be offered a wide range of opportunities at Leyton Orient including internships and coaching secondments. While the focus will primarily be on the field of applied sport and exercise science, there are plans to extend the agreement into other areas, such as physiotherapy and sports media.

UEL has already provided physiological testing support during the pre-season period to the first team squad, and the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience will be sharing its expertise through the provision of sports science support to Leyton Orient Football Academy.

Dr Nick Bourne, senior lecturer at UEL’s School of Health, Sport and Bioscience, said: “We have been working with Orient for the past three years. As one of our local clubs, we are delighted to be involved in this new partnership, which covers key areas of support including strength and conditioning, match analysis and fitness testing. It is great to finally ratify our relationship, and we look forward to helping each other reach our goals.”

Fitness and Conditioning Coach Lee Southernwood said: “We are delighted to link up with UEL, as we continue to develop the sports science support provided to all players at the club.  The internships on offer will allow UEL students to gain vital experience, whilst providing the club with additional resources to provide more comprehensive support and analysis to the players and coaching staff.  The partnership will also allow the club to maintain pace with emerging trends in sport and exercise medicine, through access to the latest information and research.”
