UEL-supported foundation, Taylor Bennett, has won the ‘Collaboration and Partnership Award’ in Business in the Community’s ‘Race for Opportunity’ Awards for the Taylor Bennett Foundation’s training programme, which encourages black and minority ethnic (BAME) candidates to join the communications profession. The 10 week course, run 4 times a year, is organised in partnership with external stakeholders, of which the University of East London is the leading academic institution.

The judges cited the ambitious length and scope of the training courses and the number and range of partners involved as winning factors.

Taylor Bennett Foundation Director Anne Groves said: “This award means so much to us. Since starting the programme four years ago with the support of the University of East London, among others, almost 100 trainees have been through the course, over 70 per cent of whom are now working in the industry. We are hugely appreciative of our supporters and business partners and believe that, together, we are helping to change the face of the communications industry.” UEL has been the foundation’s lead university partner since 2008.

One former intern said: "One of the biggest things the programme has given us is confidence. We are no longer just a group of kids from diverse backgrounds that might not make it. The programme opens your eyes – you can look at yourself outside your usual situation. The only barrier to accessibility is in our minds."
