UEL photography student recognised at prestigious FujiFilm awards

Fuji Film Award

UEL second year photography student, Ricardo Raspa, has been recognised with one of just nine ‘merit’ awards at the prestigious FujiFilm Student Awards 2012.

The competition, which invites submissions from across the UK, took the word ‘extreme’ as its theme this year, with students being asked to capture their interpretation of the word in a single image. All images submitted had to be shot on traditional film.

Ricardo’s winning image, entitled simply: ‘Student Riots London’,  Nov10 depicts a clash between protesters and armed police officers, shot in vivid black and white.

Ricardo said: “The image was taken during the protests against the student fees reform in Parliament road in 2010. The situation went wrong when the police ‘kettled’ us- the protesters and by doing so,  the tension started building up.”

“I captured the moment with a Yashica GSN camera loaded with black & white Fujifilm. Luckily because of this, I was allowed to apply for the Fujifilm student award. The result is not quite there, so I hope next time I will do better, but I still like the photo.”

Ralph Hall, Senior Lecturer in Photography at UEL, said: “I never cease to be impressed by the talent of our photography students here at UEL. Ricardo, among them, has a bright future as a photographer, and this award attests to the quality of his work. His winning image is a fantastic piece of photo-journalism, which really captures the chaotic intensity of a moment in history.”
