Hot on the heels of the London 2012 Games, UEL is launching an exciting new tennis programme with the aim of ingraining the sport into university and local community life.
With support from the Tennis Foundation, UEL’s plans to establish itself as a university synonymous with tennis excellence will start in earnest from September 2012.
UEL recently appointed a University Tennis Coordinator who will be responsible for developing the community programme. Appointed until 2014, the coordinator will deliver a programme of mini tennis to local residents, and the increasingly popular cardio tennis for university staff and students. As part of the role, the coordinator will oversee the management of tennis players who compete for UEL in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league.
At the same time, UEL has also forged a partnership with local high performance tennis provider, WimX, so that the next generation of tennis superstars can be identified and offered the opportunity to have their talent developed and nurtured through UEL’s elite scholarship athlete scheme.
David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL, said: “One of the abiding memories of the Olympics is Andy Murray winning his Gold Medal game against Roger Federer. Through this programme, we hope to discover the players with untapped potential who can follow in Andy’s immortal footsteps, and put East London firmly on the map as a strong breeding ground for world-class tennis players.
“However, we also want to make tennis accessible and fun to students and local people who perhaps have not had the opportunity to play the game before. This programme firmly complements our bid to become the number one university for sport in London by 2015.”
