The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and 24 Hour Fitness officially opened Team USA’s High Performance Training Centre (HPTC) earlier today with a ceremonial ribbon cutting involving USA Basketball Coach, Mike Krzyzewski (AKA Coach K), at SportsDock – the University of East London’s new £21million sports facility.

Also headlining the event were 2012 U.S. Olympians – Tony Azevedo, water polo, and Kerri Walsh, beach volleyball – as well as the head coach of the women’s basketball teams, Geno Auriemma.

Speaking to UEL at the media call, Geno Auriemma said: “We’re really looking forward to the Olympics. The Docklands Campus feels like home and I think that will benefit the team. This part of London has experienced an incredible transformation and I think everyone should feel very proud of that – particularly UEL.”

UEL Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick McGhee, said: “In the run up to the Olympics, there has been a lot of discussion and debate about legacy and what that actually means. When the Olympics finish, students, staff and members of the local community will be able to use SportsDock in a matter of days, and tread in the footsteps of sporting superstars who trained there, such as Michael Phelps and Kobe Bryant. I believe this is a cast iron example of what Olympic legacy is all about.”

24 Hour Fitness provided technical insight and consultation to the USOC to help design and outfit the centre, which serves as a home training base for Team USA’s delegation of hundreds of athletes as they train to compete in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
