Jill Daniels, senior lecturer in Film and Video practice at UEL’s School of Arts and Digital Industries, has won an award for her film -The Border Crossing - at this year’s Athens International Film Festival.
The film won in the ‘Best Feature Documentary’ category. Taking place in Ohio, USA, since 1974, the festival presents independent films from around the world, and is considered to be one of the foremost independent film festivals in the USA.
The Border Crossing is an experimental documentary exploring Daniels’ personal memories of violence 30 years ago hitchhiking through the Basque country. Merging past and present, documentary and fiction, she utilises her own off-screen voice and the voice of a young woman who appears as her younger self. Two different generations of Basque women, Maria and Atiziber talk movingly about the Spanish Civil War and the continuing effects of violence in the Basque country.
Jill said: “I am delighted to have won this award at a festival that has supported my work over many years. Ruth Bradley, the director, has established this festival as one of the foremost independent film festivals in America and her commitment to supporting independent film-makers is exemplary.”
The film can be seen on the University of East London’s student gallery website, here:
