UEL has made serious headway in the ‘Green League’ this year jumping from a ranking of 41 to 16th position, making it the second greenest University in London.
The league, published by the Guardian this month, highlights positive environmental progress in universities, and is designed to test the commitment of academic institutions in creating a fair and sustainable future.
Universities are judged by their performance in 13 criteria points, which test whether they are contributing to a sustainable and low-carbon education sector, as well as equipping their graduates with the skills they need to enter a global, low-carbon economy.
UEL’s commitment to the green agenda is already evident across the university. The recent Green Impact Awards highlighted the progress UEL is making towards becoming a sustainable university.
Renowned wildlife consultant and TV presenter, Dusty Gedge, presented the awards, giving a speech about the importance of ‘green roofs’ in the urban environment highlighting the benefit they offer to urban plant, insect and bird species.
The presentation was part of the Green Impact Awards Ceremony, which recognised and supported staff who have gone the extra mile to make positive green changes across the University’s campuses.
UEL has achieved over five thousand ‘Greening Actions’ across the University, including energy audits of departments and writing departmental environmental policies.
Sara Kassam, UEL’s Energy and Environment Manager said: “We are thrilled that the hard work and enthusiasm of staff and students has been recognised through our improved position in the Green League. Now we need to ensure that we maintain this momentum!”
