Last week’s East is East arts exhibition staged by the University of East London’s School of Arts and Digital Industries in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was a resounding success according to all of those involved.
The exhibition was designed to celebrate UEL’s multiculturalism and presence in Malaysia, while recognising the work of some of its most talented students, alumni and staff. UEL's presence in the country was also marked by the signing of an agreement between the University and Tunku Abdul Rahman College in Kuala Lumpur. The agreement will allow Malaysian business and arts students to complete the final year of their undergraduate courses and take postgraduate qualifications in London.
A number of other events were also held during the exhibition, including a VIP reception attended by honorary award holders Raja Teh Maimunah Raja Abdul Aziz, CEO of Hong Leong Islamic Bank, and Dato Nellie Tan-Wong, founder of the Malaysian Women’s Institute of Management. Also in attendance were Harisa Zambri, a current UEL student on sabbatical from Tunku Abdul Rahman College and celebrated Malaysian artist Ivan Lam. Lam had previously studied under the tutelage of UEL academic and event organiser, Hedley Roberts.
An alumni event held the next day featured as guest speaker, Abdulkadir Shehu, a former UEL student who, despite only graduating last year, also launched his new book, Joomla 1.5 (website building software) in 60 minutes, later that week.
The alumni event was attended by UEL’s deans of the Royal Docks Business School, the School of Arts and Digital Industries, the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience, Associate Dean of the Cass School of Education, the Director of Corporate Marketing, Director of the International Office and Pro Vice-Chancellor International, John Shaw.
The book launch, which took place on the Saturday, was attended by H.E. Amb. Bello Shehu Ringimhe, Nigerian High Commissioner for Malaysia, Ms. Latungika Loide Shikwambi, the First Secretary of the High Commission of the Republic of Namibia to Malaysia and Ghana’s Minister Plenipotentiary in Malaysia.
Catherine Harper, UEL’s Dean of School for Arts and Digital Industries said: “It is fantastic to be able to celebrate the achievements of UEL students and alumni across all of our schools in this way. I would like to thank our students, staff, alumni and friends in Malaysia for welcoming us all so graciously.”
“I would also like to offer my thanks to Hedley Roberts, Sian-Kate Mooney and Garry Doherty for making the event possible, and also to Harisa, who came back to Malaysia to help hang the exhibition. I look forward to a continued long and fruitful relationship with our Malaysian partner colleges.”
