UEL will be staging a show in Kuala Lumpur today (Thursday 19 April) in the form of a creative industries showcase, hosted by the University’s School of Arts and Digital Industries.

The event follows a private view on Wednesday attended by Raja Teh Maimunah Raja Abdul Aziz, CEO of Hong Leong Islamic Bank, and Nellie Tan-Wong, founder of the Malaysian Women’s Institute of Management, both of whom were bestowed with honorary doctorates from the University last year. Deputy British High Commissioner for Malaysia, Ray Kyles, was also in attendance.

The showcase, sponsored by UEL’s fabric print bureau, Fabpad, entitled East is East, offers prospective students in the country the chance to view exciting new works by both undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as by staff from the university.

UEL has collaborative partnerships throughout South East Asia, with many thousands of students having taken UEL accredited qualifications in Malaysia alone. The School of Arts and Digital Industries offers the opportunity to study degree programmes in Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, Animation and Fashion in Malaysia and is developing further strategic opportunities with other educational institutions there.

The event will feature among other things film projections, animations, hanging textiles, large-scale photographs, light works using projected silhouettes and even fashion 'sculptures' worn by live models.

Among the exhibitions will be Conjoined Dresses, a masters showcase piece by internationally respected pattern cutting expert Belgin Vehbi (pictured); beautiful ink drawings in the style of traditional Taiwanese brush painting techniques by UEL Fine Art Professional Doctorate student Chin Wu; and fashion outfits from UEL postgraduate student Jess Man Teng Ma’s collection, All Petals Eventually Fall.

British fine artist and UEL field leader, Hedley Roberts, will present his work, The Last Kiss You Ever Gave. Roberts was a tutor to the renowned Malaysian artist Ivan Lam, an alumnus of UEL's International Contemporary Art and Design Practice masters programme.

Catherine Harper, Dean of UEL’s School of Arts and Digital Industries, said: “This exhibition represents both UEL’s multicultural ethos and the sheer breadth of artistic talent that the University produces. We hope prospective students will come down to the event and be inspired to consider studying with UEL’s partners in that part of the world.”
