The University of East London has scooped two bronze medals in the Podium Awards and is also a supporting partner in a gold medal nomination.
The Podium Awards is a prestigious one-off celebration recognising the vital role colleges and universities across the UK have played in delivering the London 2012 Games. Podium will be hosting an awards evening on Thursday, 3 May 2012 to showcase the very best of the Further and Higher Education sectors.
UEL has been awarded bronze medals in two separate categories: The British Council Award for Innovative International Collaboration (higher education only) and the Research Councils UK (RCUK) Award for Exceptional Research Contribution. The medals were awarded to UEL for Games-time partnership with Team USA and its London-Rio: Olympic Cities research into the Olympic and Paralympic legacy for mega event host cities, respectively.
In the Award for Outstanding Sporting Project, the Host Borough Colleges – of which UEL is a supporting partner – have a gold medal in their sights for the Inter College Festival of Sport, which is a joint initiative between the nine colleges located within the six Olympic host boroughs.
UEL Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick McGhee, said: “I’m delighted Podium has recognised the vital role UEL is playing in the London 2012 Games on an operational level and the fantastic research we are also contributing to the Olympic community. This is yet further evidence that UEL is well on track in its bid to become the number one university for sport in London by 2015.”
The Podium Awards forms part of Universities Week 2012 which takes place from Sunday, 30 April to Monday, 7 May and will recognise higher education's contribution to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
UEL’s Docklands and Stratford Campuses will play host to Team USA during the London 2012 Games, with many athletes training at SportsDock – a brand new state-of-the-art sports facility, which officially opened to the public last weekend.
