UEL did its part to celebrate International Women’s Day by hosting an exhibition of the women involved in the construction of the London 2012 Olympic Park.
Held at the soon to be opened SportsDock, the Women in the Making of the London Olympics exhibition features photographs and inspirational quotes from some of the women who took part in the development and construction of the Olympic site and the surrounding area. Participants at all stages and in all aspects of development are represented, from the initial surveyors to project managers, and ecological operatives.
The exhibition reflects the Women into Construction Project - an Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) initiative aimed at increasing women’s inclusivity in the traditionally male construction industry.
Speaking at the launch of the exhibition, Jennette Arnold OBE, who is a member of UEL’s Board of Governors and helped implement the ODA’s Big Build project, said:These women represent the women of London. I thought, ‘what story will there be, after the Olympics of ordinary women who have been involved in this amazing task?’
“I thought we should capture images of ordinary women in London involved in this amazing project. This is the fourth outing of the exhibition and I’m thrilled that it’s here during International Women’s Day.”
The exhibition, which is located near the entrance area to SportsDock, is free and will remain open to the public for the coming months.
The official opening of SportsDock will take place on Saturday, 24 March, between 10.00am and 5.00pm at UEL’s Docklands Campus. The event is free and open to the public.
