A new careers service for young people in Newham was launched at the University of East London yesterday.
CareersBuzz is a community interest company sponsored by UEL and CareersINFO, which will offer professional guidance to young people aged between 14 and 19 years old about the options available to them in an interactive, honest and engaging way.
Using a variety of multimedia tools, from iPhone apps to the Careersbox website and short films, the CareersBuzz – a mobile learning vehicle – will make a real impact to help those at risk of reaching NEET (not in education, employment or training) status. It will also support professional development for teachers and career guidance professionals.
Speaking at yesterday’s launch in the Docklands, Professor Rachel Mulvey from UEL, said: “We’re delighted that CareersBuzz is finally up and running and we really hope this will make a positive impact on the lives of young people. While the service will offer practical and impartial advice, CareersBuzz will also provide a fun and interactive way to find out about the wide range of different career options that are available.”
Founder and creative director of Careersinfo, Nick Newman said: “This new scheme will offer young people the opportunity to take control of their future and plenty of ideas as to what career options they can progress and ways in which they can broaden their horizons.”
CareersBuzz, which will be staffed by career guidance professionals, is available to visit secondary schools in Newham. For further information, contact Professor Rachel Mulvey on m.r.mulvey@uel.ac.uk
