UEL rowers triumph in uncharted waters

Friday 2 March 2012

BUCS Rowing

Despite what were extremely testing conditions, a team of high performance scholarship athletes from UEL defied the odds to win gold in a fiercely competitive rowing competition.

In the recent British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Rowing 4s and 8s Head in Peterborough, the crack team of Alan Sinclair, Tom Wilkinson, John Collins and David Bell overcame 4.5km of rough and freezing waters to see off Loughborough and Durham Universities – both of whom have Team GB oarsmen in their line-up.

Even though the UEL crew was set off last in their event, as they were a new entry, they still managed to ease past seven crews in unsettled waters. The victory takes this year’s UEL rowing club medal tally to six so far. After competing with more than 50 universities, making up more than 600 rowers, the UEL rowing team are now looking forward to an even larger rowing event – the Henley Royal Regatta 2012.

Speaking about their victory, Tom Wilkinson said: “It’s a great feeling to record a win on my first ever race for UEL. We managed to get off to a fantastic start and I’m just delighted that we won by such a big margin.”

The University of East London aims to become the number one university for sport in London by 2015.
