The University of East London has demonstrated its commitment to tackling homophobia in sport by being the first UK university to be involved in the National Union of Students ‘Out in Sport’ project.

The University is also one of the first in the country to sign the government’s charter on tackling homophobia and transphobia in sport.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick McGhee, signed the charter last week, saying: “As an institution we are committed to greater inclusivity. By being one of the first universities both to sign the charter and to become involved with the NUS ‘Out in Sport’ project we are making an explicit commitment to LGBT inclusion in sport.”

Vicki Barrs, NUS LGBT Officer (women's place) , said: “ We're delighted to have UEL on board with the project and value their participation in our steering group. The commitment made by the institution and the enthusiasm shown by students and staff  are greatly appreciated. Our 'Out in Sport' project is the first work that seeks to understand the experiences of LGBT students in further and higher education.“

The University is already recognised as a Stonewall champion and awarded renowned Stonewall FC footballer Aslie Pitter with an honorary doctorate at this year’s graduation ceremonies.

UEL opens its state-of-the-art sports centre, SportsDock, in March, and aims to be recognised as the number one university for sport in London by 2015.
