A UEL student has attained the highest qualification in the Duke of Edinburgh awards, a challenging programme of activities which must be completed before the participant reaches 25 years of age.
Adaeze Onii- Egbunine, a third-year medical physiology student, attended the award ceremony at St James’s Palace late last year, receiving her certificate from the HRH the Duke of Edinburgh himself.
The ceremony is the culmination of many months of hard work on Adaeze’s part, including sports, volunteering to teach children at a nursery and schooling herself in cookery. She also spent several days on expedition in the Brecon Beacons, South Wales, describing the adventure as “one of the toughest experiences of my life.”
Adaeze says the overall experience helped her believe she could ‘achieve the most difficult thing if only I put my mind to it’. She recommended the Duke of Edinburgh scheme to everyone to help them build confidence and to ‘make their CVs stand out at a time when there is so much competition for jobs.’
